Danny "Boy" Boyers
Saturday, 16 June 2007

Danny "Boy" Boyers joined The Sportsline in December of 2006 ... after his Cross-Country or Track & Field Season (is there really a difference ... and if so ... does anyone even care what the difference is?) was over.  Danny had been a long time listener of the show and decided to finally add a little excitement to his life.  You see he is dating an old lady named Doris (much more on her later) and as you can see from his hobbies listed below ... Danny doesn't really know how to have fun.

Once upon a time ... Danny was on pace to win 'Bracketmania', except on that particular year bonus points were given to participants who visited local sponsors and Danny was to busy running in circles to take advantage of those bonus points.  As you might imagine, that cost Danny bigtime ... No golf get-a-way for him.  Danny Boy still remains bitter to this day.

Rich and Larry like to have fun at Danny's girlfriend Doris' expense claiming that she is quite elderly.  I mean come on ... have you ever met a young beautiful woman named Doris?  Exactly!  Doris does have a great sense of humor ... even if she is in bed each evening before 8:30.  For Valentine's Day ... she suprised Danny Boy by bringing is Valentine's Day present by the studio for all to enjoy.  It was a mock cover of a famous men's magazine with Danny's face on the cover.  The headline 'outed' him as a possible lover of Tom Brady!  Good girl Doris!

Despite his stuggles to answer the phones (how much can we really expect from a public school teacher?), Danny is a great asset to the show.  Much like everyone else on the staff, Danny is quick to fire back at R&R or anyone else who is getting on him.  He even dubbed Larry "Cecil" in honor of the 'athlete' he feels Larry most resembles ... former Detrioit Tiger DH/1B Cecil Fielder.

Danny was born in Lynchburg and as a youth played many sports including football and baseball. In middle school it became obvious that Danny was too skinny for football and couldn’t hit a curve ball. His father decided to take Danny on a run as a last ditch effort to make an athlete out of his son (like runners are real athletes). Fortunately for dad this worked out as Danny would experience success running in circles.

Danny took his circle and cross country running exploits to the Virginia Military Institute where he majored in survival. After three years of semi-successful running the coach decided that a hurt Danny Boy was useless and got rid of him. Coach still refers to Danny Boy affectionately as the “best mullet I ever coached”.  Maybe Danny Boy was cut (yes apparently they do cut kids from the cross country team!) because never understood why he was called a mullet when his head was shaved. Danny Boy would then do what every ex runner does. He ran a marathon, drank adult beverages, and then became a coach.

After college Danny Boy taught high school for a year and vowed never to do it again (don’t make vows). He then spent a year in South America meeting women and learning Spanish and even getting married which he doesn’t recommend. The marriage didn't last ... largely in part do to Danny watching too much Track & Field on TV (back when he actually had one).  In past couple of years Danny Boy has been teaching middle school History and coaching Cross Country at EC Glass High School.

Danny Boy claims that he decided to join Rich and Larry in Dec 2006 in one final attempt to bring a “real athlete” and some credibility to the show.  Anyone buying that one?  A jogger claiming to be a "real athlete"?  The audacity!

Danny is currently dating the aforementioned Doris ... although there is no ring on her finger and from the way Danny is talking ... it doesn't figure to happen anytime soon either.

Nickname: Danny Boy
How you got the nickname: Sometimes it just falls in your lap

Born: Lovely Lynchburg, VA

Best sports moment I have ever had:
Coaching the EC Glass Cross Country Team to top 10 team finishes in the state meet. Also placing in the Top 20 at the Charlotte Observer Marathon way back in college.  (Top  10 & 20??? How about a damned win for best sports moment?)
Sports Team
: New York Mets. Dates back to the days of the Lynchburg Mets
All Time favorite Met
: Dwight Gooden (before drugs)
Job that pays the bills
: Teacher and Coach
Career Goal
: Danny Boy doesn’t make goals, that requires planning
Why I love my Job
: Great pay and wonderful parents (he says dripping with sarcasm)
Favorite Movie

Favorite Sports Movie:
Prefontaine (It’s a running movie for the normal folks who don't know)
Favorite TV Show

Most Embarrassing moment on the air
: Being 'outed' by Doris, when she delivered a magazine cover with Danny's picture superimposed over Tom Brady’s with numerous gay references. Nothing quite like being called gay by your own girlfriend (and she wonders why he hasn’t proposed).
