Tragedy in Blacksburg ... AD Vassallo, Mike Burnup, Drake Anderson & Nathan Warters
Monday, 16 April 2007

Today on The Sportsline with Rich and Larry ... 76 days and counting ... but of course all of our hearts today are with the folks in Blacksburg after the unbelievable shooting tragedy has shocked us all.  VT hoops star AD Vassallo joined R&R right off the bat to offer up the details of his morning, as he lives in the building directly adjacent to West AJ, the dorm in which the shootings began early Monday morning.

Next Mike Burnup, Color Analyst for the VT Radio Network discussed the days events and offered up  some of the details as he learned them from the Press Conferences which took place throughout the course of the day.  Burnup pointed out that no details were available about schedules for the VT athletic teams ... but did say that sports can definitely be a big part of helping a community heal, whenever that time comes.

Nathan Warters of the Lynchburg News and Advance checked in to relay some of the feelings and perspectives of some of the different athletes and their parents that he talked to throughout the course of the day.  Nathan reported that none of the VT hoops or football players were reportedly involved in the incident ... and also updated the status of some of the other athletes at Tech that are from the Central Virginia area.

Hour Two kicked off with Drake Anderson, host of "The Press Box" on Blacksburg's ESPN Radio AM 1430.  Drake spent most of the day on the Tech Campus conducting interviews and covering the tragedy ... and was able to shed some more light and details on the timeline and how everything went down earlier in the day.

R&R finished up the final segments of the show talking with listeners and callers.  Some were concerned that VT might try to press on with the spring football game scheduled for this Saturday and would not allow the Tech community enough time to heal.  Others questioned the decision making at the top of the ladder at Virginia Tech and the police department as to why the entire campus was not locked down after the first incident.  Rich pointed out that it was a valid question, although he wondered if there would not be plenty of time for finger pointing once all of the relatives are notified and once we have a better idea of what all transpired.  But the question of why more wasn't done earlier is a legitimate one ... and how many lives could have been saved if the entire campus was locked down sooner.
