Jagodzinski to BC sparks the Great Marty Debate
Monday, 18 December 2006

On Today's show, lots of football talk.  Mainly NFL, although Rich and Larry did talk some college football as well.

Unbelievably, the closer we get to the end of the regular season, the more convoluded the NFL Playoff picture looks.  Rich pointed out that as of today, 25 of the 32 teams are still mathematically alive for the playoffs, with scenarios about how they can get in.  According to Rich, this is way too many, and is a major flaw in the NFL's parity driven system.  While it allows more teams and fans to keep their interest into the final weeks of the season, Double R believes that it devalues not only the playoffs, but the Superbowl as well, as there is not necessarily a best team that wins, as much as a lucky team, or a team that gets hot at the right time.

R&R also talked about the reported hiring of Jeff Jagodzinski as the new head coach at Boston College, replacing Tom O'Brien who bolted BC for NC State earlier this month.  Jagodzinski is currently the Offensive Coordinator for the Packers and had previously served in the same role under O'Brien at BC.

This reported hiring brought up the debate between Rich and Larry about programs and teams, and their fans expectations.  Larry operates under the belief that fans should be "realistic" about their team and program and where it stands, and should not want or expect it to ever reach greater heights.  BC fans for example, according to Larry, should have been happy with 7 or 8 wins and going to a bowl game most years.  Conference Championships, and BCS games are out of reach for the Eagles, and he feels fans should stop expecting the coach and the team to shoot for and try to reach those lofty goals.

Rich on the other hand, thinks that Championships should always be the goal of fans and programs.  If Wake Forest can get to an ACC Championship and BCS Bowl game, is it really that unreasonable for BC fans to expect that the Eagles can do that as well?  Tom O'Brien is much like Marty Schottenheimer, according to Rich, a solid coach who will consistentantly deliver winning seasons, but  will never come through with the big prize.  So if your team doesn't want the big prize, bring him on board.

The final half hour of the show was pretty funny ... kinda like one of those Verizon commercials "Can you hear me now?"  Phillip Wilson of the Indianapolis Star hooked up with R&R on a couple of occasions live from Indy to preview the MNF matchup between the Colts and Bengals.  The RCA Dome was really loud though ... and the interview proved fruitless.
