Thursday on The Sportsline with Rich and Larry ... lots going on today including the Redskins and Bears on Thursday Night Football, but R&R start out talking about loyalty in college football as Jim Grobe passed on a huge offer from Arkansas to stay at Wake Forest. Rich thinks several ACC schools are different then other schools like ECU and Southern Miss who rewarded their respective coaches loyalty by showing them the door at the first sign that the program was stagnating a little bit. The bottom line in college football is that you have to go when your star is shining bright, otherwise it could be lights out. Wes also checked in with a Sportsline History Moment. Dave Glenn, editor of the ACC Area Sports Journal checked in and continued the loyalty in coaching conversation with Rich and Larry. Glenn pointed out the safeguard that Chan Gailey had in his contract to protect him from getting the boot from Ga Tech was that if he was fired, he got 100% payment of his contract over the entire duration of the deal. Not bad stuff as he will collect a cool million for the next few years for doing nothing. Glenn also noted that Paul Johnson of Navy is the guy that both Ga Tech and Duke are hoping to lure away from Navy. Rocco may be on the B-List at Duke. Glenn also touched on both VT and UVa and commented how both had outstanding seasons. Ryan O'Halloran of the Washington Times dropped by live from FedEx Field as the Skins were getting ready for tonites game with the Chicago Bears. O'Halloran talked about how the Skins really need to step up their game since they are not getting any help from their head coach! Ouch! O'Halloran also feels that if the Skins lose tonite ... they might just wind up losing the rest of thier games. His one word for tonites game ... SNORE! A caller calls in to talk about Sean Taylor's jersey being re-issued by Reebok to help benefit his daughter. Rich and Larry wrap up the show talking about broadcasters and how much everyone thinks Bryant Gumbel sucks. Rich tried to give him the benefit of the doubt ... but enough is enough already. Also, both R&R agree that Paul McGuire needs to get back to the NFL and be given some respect for the great job he does by ESPN. Larry also does a lousy job trying to nail some of the college football lines for the bowl games. |
