Signing Day 2007
Wednesday, 07 February 2007

Today on The Sportsline with Rich and Larry ... 144 and counting ... but that's not a factor today because it's SIGNING DAY.  That's right, the only day all year that R&R talk high school football recruiting ... but when they do it ... they do it right.

Rich and Larry kicked off the show by catching up with one of Virginia's top recruiting minds, Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times.  Doug talked about the classes UVA and Tech have coming in, as well as their success in the state.  After Doug, Jim Cavanaugh, the recruiting coordinator for the Hokies dropped by to talk about their class ... ranked in the mid to upper 20's nationally according to some of the recruiting services.  Cavanaugh hates the fact that top Hokie recruit Tyrod Taylor is classified as a 'dual threat' QB rather than just a QB.  He also pointed out that he was right last year, when he called the fact that lots of the top recruits left the state in '06 an 'aberration'.

Dave Glenn, editor of the ACC Area Sports Journal was up next to talk about the ACC as a whole. Dave pointed out that BC and NC State really struggled after hiring their new coaches fairly late in the process, while Miami and UNC did great with their new coaches.  UNC in particular landed a lot of big time recruits on signing day ... making a real big impact on their squad.  Glenn said that UVA and Tech both had good classes ... kind of middle of the pack in the ACC.  He said that both Tyrod Taylor and Peter Lalich were going to be the keys to each class.

R&R next caught up with a couple of the big recruits heading to Tech and UVA.  Davon Morgan out of Richmond is headed to Blacksburg and will be moving from the QB to the safety position.  He talked about why he was making the change (better shot at the NFL) and then talked some trash about UVA and incoming QB Peter Lalich, who was next up on the show.  R&R played Morgan's trash talk for Lalich ... but Peter just kind of blew it off.

Jerry 'Hootie' Ratcliffe of the Charlottesville Daily Progress and author of the Gold List was next up on the show. He talked also about UVA and Tech's classes ... saying that Taylor would definitely be the key for the Hokies ... but some other guys for UVA may be as important or even more important that Lalich in the long run.  Ratcliffe was interrupted by UVa head coach Al Groh ... who seemed very upbeat and happy with his recruiting class.  He touched on the fact that his staff worked hard at building long lasting relationships with recruits ... and that played a role in not losing anyone after a disappointing season.

Chris Wallace, the editor of CavsCorner.com dropped by the studio for the final 40 minutes or so of the show.  He stated that he thought that UVa had a really good class and most importantly filled some of its needs, like OL and WR.  Rival.com national recruiting expert JC Shurburtt joine R&R for a few minutes and commented on how Florida has joined USC in the elite recruiting class, touched on the disappointing class for FSU and commented on some of the freaky stuff that happened on Signing Day including Noel Devine, under the guidance of Deion Sanders, did not sign with West Virginia as he was supposed to have done.

Finally, Danny Rocco head coach at Liberty stopped by the show.  Rocco claims to have had another solid class, lead by two Florida kids who had offers from Division 1a schools, but chose the Flames.  Rocco also did a solid job in the state ... landing 8 more players from the Commonwealth.
