Ultimate Right at Daytona, Dave Rodman rips NASCAR & BOG Fund Anniversary
Monday, 19 February 2007

Today on The Sportsline with Rich and Larry ... 131 days and counting but today comes the news that Tom Brady is allegedly the father of the baby being carried by his former girlfriend.  Can you say 'artificial insemination' ... if its even his kid!

President's Day means R&R are alone in the building as most of the staff that works for The Sportsline's flagship station WLNI are off for the day.  Rich and Larry dove right into the discussion on the Daytona 500.  Eventually they got into the controversial ending of the race ... but first was the discussion of how much of the race each of them could actually stomach ... and Larry grew concerned about his wife's RedNeck showing through, as she screamed in support of Mark Martin on the Final Lap.

Rich and Larry dove into the topic of the final lap, and whether or not NASCAR should have thrown the yellow flag earlier and frozen the field ... rather than let Harvick and Martin race to the checkered flag for the win.  Larry made a great observation ... that Nascar invoked RR's 'Theory of Ultimate Right' without actually calling it that or giving Double R the credit he so rightly deserves.  Ultimate Right states that an official has the authority to overrule the rule book in situations in which the overrule actually produces a more just outcome.  In this case, even though the rule may have called for a yellow flag and a frozen field, since the trouble was behind the leaders ... the overrule led to a fantastic finish and more importantly, the race being decided on the race track.  In Double R's opinion ... NASCAR got one right.

For the next 40 minutes or so, the callers had their chance to chime in on the race.  Some felt that Martin got screwed ... others liked the race to the checkered, some felt NASCAR needs to be consistent with the rules ... others favored ultimate right and some even questioned if indeed the yellow flag was actually thrown.  Pretty good stuff ... especially for race talk.

Sportsline Historian Wes chimed in with 'This Day in Sportsline History' and went back to 2003 and the birth of 'the BOG fund'.  BOG stands for 'Buy Out Gillen' in which a number of listeners of The Sportsline actually contributed cash to help UVA buy out Pete Gillen's contract.

In hour 2, Dave Rodman of NASCAR.com dropped by the show to talk about the race.  He began by complimenting Kevin Harvick, claiming his is the real deal when it comes to a race car driver, and that it seems that he has finally grasped the concept that he needs to be in contorl of himself all of the time and has finally grown up.  Rodman also ripped NASCAR for not throwing the yellow flag on the final lap ... saying it needs to be consistent with it's rules, especially when it comes to driver safety.

Rich and Larry next ran down The Sportsline's NASCAR Fantasy Standings, presented by ABC 13 WSET ... and welcomed The Manor House Cafe at Poplar Grove back for another year as a sponsor.  The shenanigans began early, as the Legend questioned when the points deductions would be assesed ... Double R said as soon as the website is up and running properly.  Mr. Ass gives the guys the list of drivers that were penalized ... by NUMBER.  Nice job Mr. Ass ... like R&R actually know the driver numbers.

Finally ... Larry told a story about a baseball player RR had never heard of, and it turns out none of the other 4 people in the building had heard of him either.  The Legend needs a life ... reading baseball preview magazines for fun and all ...
