JJ Yeley, Eric Montross and more Sweet 16 Qualifying
Thursday, 22 March 2007

Today on The Sportsline with Rich and Larry ... 101 days and counting ... but today begins the NCAA Sweet 16 and with it, final qualifying for The Sportsline's Sweet 16 Cover Pool with the winner scoring an overnight stay for 2 at The Homestead, courtesy of Virginia Sports Report.  R&R also talk about Matt Schaub heading to the Texans in what amounts to a great opportunity for the former Cavalier ... and how Steve Alford and Tubby Smith both left good jobs for much less appealing ones to get away from the mounting pressure.

Qualifying continues for the Sweet 16 contest on The Sportsline ... plus Sportsline Historian Wesley Q. May checks in with This Day in Sportsline History ... reminding us all of how the Comrade tried out for the local semi-pro football team, The Lynchburg Storm back in 2002.

JJ Yeley joined R&R next on the show and talked about the quick start he is off to this year.  His first year on the Cup circuit was not what he was hoping for ... but things have settled down in his second year with Joe Gibbs racing, and he feels more comfortable and relaxed.  He also talked about the benefits of having Tony Stewart as a teammate.

R&R spend more time talking about the failures of Tubby Smith at Kentucky.  He won a national championship 9 years ago, in his first year at UK with all of Pitino's players ... and hasn't been back to the Final Four since.  Enjoy Minnesota ... could have been at UVA a couple of years ago.

Eric Montross, former All-American at UNC and now the color analyst for the Tarheel Sports Network was next to drop by the show.  He talked about his ties to the Butler program and Bulldogs coach Todd Lickliter, and about the history and mystique of Hinkle Fieldhouse when he played there in HS and at UNC.  Eric also talked about the Tarheels, and the high level that they are currently playing at ... although he cautioned that USC is playing great too and beat down the Tarheels pretty badly last season ... so they will be ready to go.

Rich and Larry wrapped up the show taking more contestants for the Sweet 16 pool.  Tommy, a big UVa fan, couldn't name the former Wahoo who transferred to Vanderbilt and became the SEC player of the year.  Even after Larry gave him the players last name (Byers).  Nice going Tommy!
