When the best laid plan's (and a transmission) go up in smoke. UVa - Tech Showdown in C'ville
Thursday, 01 March 2007

Today on The Sportsline with Rich and Larry ... 122 days and counting.  This show previewing the big showdown betweeen UVa and Tech in C'ville for a share of first in the ACC didn't turn out quite as planned thanks to some unexpected car trouble.  Bluetooth's car broke down on the way up to JPJ Arena, where he was scheduled to hook R&R up with all of the top UVA and Tech experts from across the state.

Rich and Larry still managed to catch up with a couple of the guys via cell phones in the opening half  hour of the show.  Jeff White of the Richmond Times Dispatch came on amongst a roar from the crowd at JPJ ... but alas the roar was not for Jeff.  White talked about the unbelievable atmosphere up in Charlotessvill and the great year that the Cavs have had to date.  He picked the Hoos to get even with VT tonite.

Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times was up next from C'Ville and is not buying into the hype over the game.  He is convinced that it is not the biggest game in the history of these two hoops teams, figures one year during the Sampson days featured two teams ranked higher ... so he didn't think much of the game.  Double R pointed out that the Sampson era was over 30 years ago ... which made Doughty pause ... then comment on how old he is getting.  Doug picked VT to win again.

6:30 and Bluetooth still hasn't arrived in C'ville.  This is when the show deviates from the original plan.  Instead of talking with David Teel on a piece of state of the art radio equipment which would have made it sound like he was live in the studio with R&R ... they had to catch up with him via cell phone.  JPJ was so loud, Teel couldn't hear the questions and Rich and Larry couldn't hear the answers ... do David didn't last long on the show.

Rich and Larry both like the Cavs to win ... and got into a debate about the significance of winning the regular season ACC title.  Rich still believes its a great accomplishment, while Larry feels it doesn't have much worth considering the ACC and NCAA tournaments still remain.

To kick off the second hour, R&R replayed the Len Elmore interview from Wednesday.

Bluetooth finally arrives in C'ville ... must have taken the scenic route.  He did get a chance to talk to some scalpers on his way into JPJ ... said tixx were going for $350.  Also provided an update on the game, which had UVA out to a nice early lead.

More UVa-Tech talk ... and "This Day in Sportsline History" on Larry first being called 'The Waffle King' back in 1999.  Mr. Ass is also referred to as Judas tonite ... details may be forthcoming.
