Double R and the Legend discussed in great length the impressive
hire of Butch Davis as the new HC down at UNC...even though it is not
technically official until next week. Davis will make a huge
impact at North Carolina and according to both Rich and Larry, he is a
"Can't Miss" hire for the Tarheels. Larry went on to point out
the pressure it will surely put on several other coaches in the ACC
including Al Groh, Chuck Amato, Tommy Bowden, Chan Gailey and Ralph
Freidgen. One caller chimed in trying to change Rich and
Larry's opinion...for he was very concerned about the Carolina football
program becoming one to be reckoned with for his beloved Cavaliers.
Lute
Olsen, the Hall of Fame basketball coach at Arizona dropped by the
show, as the Wildcats come to Charlottesville to face UVA in the season
opener on Sunday. Olsen told R&R that being the opponent in
game in which a new arena is being opened is a tall order, as John Paul
Jones Arena will be christened during Sunday's game. Olsen also
talked about the rash of injuries his team has suffered during the
off-season and during practice . . . and had he known it would be such
a rough off-season, he would not have scheduled the brutal
non-conference schedule that is Wildcats will play this year.
Olsen also said that while too much emphasis is probably placed on the
NCAA tournament, it is the nature of the business and not something he
worries too much about.
Also on the show, was Erick Smith, the
college football editor of the USA Today. Erick talked about the
big matchup on Thursday night between Louisville and Rutgers.
Erick said that if you really want to root for chaos in the BCS then
you should pull for Rutgers, because the more one loss teams in the mix
for the championship game, the better. Smith also agreed with
Rich and Larry that Butch Davis is a no-brainer for UNC and that he
should be able to have that program turned around relatively quickly.
Ray
also checked in during the show. He is a disgruntled UVA fan who
will be a little new blood in the 2006 Song Parody Contest . . .
featuring the song "Hoos Your Daddy".
