Thursday's show was a dandy as Rich and Larry were the only one's on the show who were not live in the press box at Scott Stadium just prior to kickoff of the Hoos and the Heels on Thursday Night Football. The show kicked off with "Hootie" Jerry Ratcliffe, sports editor of the Charlottesville Daily Progress. After sharing a few laughs about ESPN's choice of teams to showcase in the national spotlight, everyone got down to business. Ratcliffe told Rich and Larry that while things don't look great right now for the Cavs . . . the future does look pretty bright. You'll notice this is a recurring theme throughout the night. Hootie also picked the Cavs to win easily (another recurring theme) and was obviously dead on the money.
Up next, was Bill Cole of the Winston Salem Journal to take a closer
look at the Tarheels. Bill said that there is really no reason to
expect that John Bunting will be back as the coach at Carolina next
year, except for the fact that UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour has a
lot of loyalty to Bunting, and really likes the way he represents the
University . . . off of the football field. In addition to Butch
Davis, he said that Navy head coach Paul Johnson might be a candidate
for the opening. Again, Bill predicted a big UVA win. Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times only had a couple of minutes as he was working the press box like a politician, but he did take the opportunity to rip Rich's pronunciation of Buena Vista. He took Virginia big as well. Jeff White of the Richmond Times Dispatch . . . another one who feels that the future is bright for the youthful Cavaliers. Also picked UVA to beat down the Tarheels. Jeff pointed out that one of the big things hurting UVA right now is their lack of team speed. White gave the example that most of UVA's linebackers would be D lineman in other programs, because they are just not fast enough. David Teel of the Newport News Daily Press only had a few minutes for the guys as well as kickoff was approaching. After jokingly lamenting about having to cover this "game" Teel picked UVA to win as well. Then everyone laughed it up speculating that UNC would be at a decided disadvantage when they play Dook at the season's end . . . as the Blue Devils would have a decided homefield advantage. Finally, Jerod "Bluetooth" Brooks, who was dressed to the nines incidentally for the big game, virtually guaranteed that he would deliver Erin Andrews, the sideline sweetheart for Thursday Night ESPN games, as a guest on the show. Bluetooth also assured everyone that he would come back from C'ville with Ms. Andrews digits. We shall see.
