Back in 1998, Double R and the Legend had an extra pair of tickets to the Virginia – Virginia Tech game, and came up with this silly little idea of having listeners change the lyrics to popular songs and then sing them on the air. The concept was simple. Whoever had the best song parody . . . pertaining to the UVA –Tech game and rivalry would win tickets to the game. Who would have ever guessed that it would turn into the biggest event of the year on The Sportsline. Last year we had the most competitors that we have ever had, in two different divisions (the Amateur and the Elite) in a large venue (Cattle Annies) with over 500 people in attendance. It was quite a show and left everyone anticipating the next one in 2006. We have gone from contestants in year one parodying the children’s song “The Wheels on the Bus” to 2005 where we actually had full-fledged bands rocking out to their own version of Lynard Skynard’s classic “Gimme Three Steps”. Jamie Minnix is the only competitor who has competed in each and every Song Parody Contest, winning it once in 2000 and grabbing an Amateur Division Title in 2002. KB and Ernest are the duo credited with taking the contest to a whole new level. After we heard “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Friends” theme in year one . . . KB and Earnest were the final competitors. Their takeoff of the Beverly Hillbillies (link) secured the contests place as an annual event on The Sportsline. KB and Ernest won that inaugural SP Contest in 1998 . . . got screwed from the title in 1999 by the Wahoo Girls, but came back strong in 2001 with “Bowl in California”. All in all KB and Ernest have claimed 3 Song Parody Contest Titles. Other notable contestants include Norm & The Recliners, who won back to back titles in 2003 and 2004, with Norm Claiming a Share of the 2000 Title as well. Jeff “The Boss” Maxwell always chimes in with a classic Bruce Springsteen song, finally getting his first win this past year in 2005. 2006 was another great year for the SPC as well as Jeff Maxwell and KB & Ernest wound up tying for First Place in the Elite Division, creating some controversy and setting up a big grudge match in 2007. |
