Today in Sportsline History |
Sometimes things just kind of fall into place. That's really the only way to describe the creation of "This Day in Sportsline History". And as for how Wes (perhaps the most loyal listener to The Sportsline EVER) became a "Scholar" ... well ONLY the good Lord knows how the hell that happened!
Here's Wes' version of how he went from "Pathetic, Loser Caller" to "Esteemed Historian and Professor" ...
The Origin of "This Day In Sportsline History"
According to Professor Wesley Q. May
Back in 2005, near the end of the year, I was sitting and thinking about how I had no real structure in my life. Sure I got up and went to work every day ... but I had no real goals, nothing that I looked forward to each day. Of course I have my wife and 2 sons, but the boys are old enough to be on their own and to be honest ... who wants to spend all of their free time with their wife???
Christmas of that year, I got a Farm Bureau calendar with a big chicken on the front as a present from my cousin ... and I had an idea. "I listen to The Sportsline everyday ... Why not try to keep a log of some sort of the show each day? Highlights, guests, how many times I call, and how often Rich and Larry talk about me."
It took me a couple of weeks to get into the swing of what I was trying to do, but I finally got down a system. So as the months rolled along ... I listened and kept notes, refining my technique all the while.
The calendar made its first public appearance at Lynchburg City Stadium, when I was a special invited guest of The Sportsline, to see a game in a luxurious sky box. I had Double R and the Legend autograph the front of the calendar ... and I even let the Comrade sign it. The next time the caledar made it out was at the 2006 Song Parody Contest at Cattle Annie's ... once again getting autographs of all the important people there, and again ... I let the Comrade sign it. It's so easy to feel sorry for him sometimes!
So as the year continued on ... so did my quest. December came quickly and I was trying to decide whether or not to continue on into 2007 with a new calendar. I stopped by the radio station near New Year's and offered Rich the original calendar (as I had no need for it any more because I had made copies of it). Double R was so impressed with my attention to detail and my uncanny knack to capture the true essence of the show ... that he offered me a much bigger calendar to keep going in 2007.
I accepted of course ... and in a few short weeks I became the Official Sportsline Historian. I had been waiting a lifetime for an opportunity like this. At last ... a chance to apply my degree in Historyonomics. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a real job with THAT degree!!
So ... when you find yourself just sitting around and wondering: "What were Rich and Larry doing this day on The Sportsline back in 2000?" ... just drop by sportslineradio.com and look to see.
It's like I always say ... "Sometimes History is worth repeating!"
